  Education and Sustainable Development

Education is one of the most important factors of sustainable development. Honduras suffers from various social, economic and cultural ills, among them an illiteracy rate of 32%. The Honduran population is young and major efforts are needed to educate the country’s children, hence the project to establish a Children’s Museum in San Pedro Sula, the industrial capital of Northern Honduras.

In San Pedro Sula, about 55,000 children have either dropped out of school or have not had access to any basic education. One of the aims of the museum project is to prevent children from roaming the streets and to offer informal education instead. The Children’s Museum is a huge door to the universe of science, culture, technology and art. A special concern of the museum is to raise consciousness about the natural environment.
